Roblox to Implement New Age-Based Accounts and Enhanced Parental Safety Controls Globally
Brickinfo News Agency – Roblox has announced a significant restructuring of its platform for younger users, introducing two new age-based account tiers designed to automatically align content access and communication settings with a user’s developmental stage. Starting in early June, the platform will debut “Roblox Kids” for children aged 5 to 8 and “Roblox Select” for those aged 9 to 15. This update marks a shift toward a more controlled digital environment, featuring restricted game catalogs and mandatory safety-by-default settings that limit social interactions for the youngest players.
Under the new system, Roblox Kids accounts will be restricted to a curated catalog of games with “Minimal” or “Mild” content maturity labels. All communication features will be disabled by default for this age group. For users in the Roblox Select category (ages 9–15), the platform will allow access to content rated up to “Moderate.” Both account types will feature distinct visual backgrounds within the app to clearly indicate the account status to both the user and supervising adults.
David Baszucki, Founder and CEO of Roblox, emphasized that these updates are part of an effort to create a unified safety framework. “When they roll out in early June, these accounts will more closely align content access, communication settings, and parental controls with a user’s age,” Baszucki stated. He noted that the company is also establishing an “ongoing selection process” for games available to users under 16 to ensure they meet stricter safety criteria.
To support these account tiers, Roblox is implementing a three-step continuous evaluation process for game selection. Creators must now undergo ID verification and maintain active security measures to have their games included in the younger user catalogs. Furthermore, the platform will utilize real-time evaluation, monitoring how older users interact with games and reviewing user reports to determine if a title remains suitable for children. By default, these accounts will exclude “social hangouts” and “free-form drawing games” to mitigate risks.
Parental controls are also receiving an expansion, granting guardians more granular oversight until a child turns 16. New features include the ability for parents to block specific individual games or, conversely, provide manual approval for a child to access a game that sits outside their default age rating. Parents will also retain the ability to manage direct chat settings and monitor friend lists and screen time through the integrated dashboard.
Looking ahead, Roblox confirmed it will transition to the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC) framework later this year. This move will align the platform with globally recognized standards such as ESRB and PEGI, providing region-specific ratings that reflect local cultural norms. Users who have not completed an age-check will be defaulted to the most restrictive settings until their age is verified via the platform’s global technology or by a parent.
