Brickinfo News Agency – Thailand’s Department of Airports (DOA) reported a significant influx of travelers during the 2026 Songkran festival, with over 460,000 passengers passing through its regional gateways. From April 10 to 19, the 10-day peak travel period saw Krabi, Udon Thani, and Khon Kaen emerge as the busiest hubs, reflecting a robust recovery and sustained interest in Thailand’s secondary tourism provinces.

Danai Ruengsorn, Director General of the Department of Airports, revealed that the total passenger volume reached 460,817 individuals, encompassing both domestic and international travelers. During this period, the department managed a total of 3,374 flights, consisting of 3,230 domestic operations and 144 international services. This surge in air traffic highlights the growing demand for regional connectivity during Thailand’s most celebrated traditional New Year holiday.

According to the official statistics, Krabi International Airport maintained its position as the busiest regional hub, welcoming 95,000 passengers on 720 flights. Udon Thani Airport followed in second place with 63,492 passengers and 436 flights, while Khon Kaen Airport ranked third, serving 54,475 passengers through 382 flight movements. These figures underscore the importance of these provinces as key strategic points for both tourism and local transit.

Beyond passenger traffic, the DOA also reported on air cargo performance, which totaled 63,037 kilograms across its network. Surat Thani Airport recorded the highest cargo weight at 15,737 kilograms, followed by Nakhon Si Thammarat Airport at 13,084 kilograms and Udon Thani Airport at 9,361 kilograms. The data suggests a steady flow of goods alongside the high volume of holiday travelers.

Regarding the overall operations, Danai Ruengsorn stated that the measures for convenience and safety, aligned with Ministry of Transport policies, were implemented effectively. “The overall situation remained orderly. Public transportation services from airports to city centers and tourist attractions were sufficient, ensuring no passengers were left stranded,” he noted. He further added that based on the travel statistics, there is a clear upward trend in tourism and travel, particularly during the high season.

In response to this growth, the Department of Airports plans to enhance its readiness for future tourist arrivals. The department aims to modernize its facilities and streamline services to ensure speed, safety, and a positive experience for all users under its supervision.
