Thailand Shifts Strategy from Filming Hub to Creative Content Partner at Cannes 2026
Brickinfo News Agency – The Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP), under the Ministry of Commerce, hosted the “Thai Night Cannes 2026” event at the Cannes Film Festival in France. Under the theme “Reimagining Thailand,” the initiative highlighted the country’s economic strategy to transition from a traditional destination for foreign film locations into an active global partner in original content creation and co-production.
Her Royal Highness Princess Ubolratana Rajakanya Sirivadhana Barnavadi attended the event and delivered a special keynote address regarding the country’s development in the entertainment industry. She emphasized that while Thailand remains known for its filming locations, it is increasingly becoming a nation recognized for its creativity and contemporary culture. Through films and series, the country continues to present its distinct creative perspectives and identity to international audiences.

The event took place alongside the Marché du Film 2026, where the DITP organized the Thailand Pavilion to support Thai media companies in securing international partnerships. A total of 15 commercial entities participated, including major local firms such as GDH 559, Sahamongkolfilm International, GMM Studios International, and T&B Media Global. These companies presented projects spanning various genres, such as drama, action, thriller, fantasy, romantic comedy, series, and animation.
Ms. Sunanta Kangvalkulkij, Director-General of the DITP, explained that the initiative is intended to secure an expanded role for local entertainment projects in the global creative economy. “Thailand is evolving from a major international filming destination into a creator of original content with a distinctive identity and strong global potential. We are ready to collaborate with partners from around the world to help shape the future of the entertainment industry. Thailand offers a combination of skilled talent, creativity, internationally recognized production infrastructure, and continued government support — all of which are key factors in driving Thailand’s creative economy onto the global stage,” she stated.
During the event, upcoming cinematic projects were presented to global distributors, including the horror-thriller Confessions of a Shaman produced by M Studio. The presentation featured a discussion panel with director Nuttanont Chollampi and cast members, including BamBam Kunpimook Bhuwakul, Alek Teeradetch Metawarayut, and Denice Jelilcha Kapaun, focusing on the export potential of Thai cinema. This year’s promotional campaign also coincided with the 170th anniversary of official diplomatic relations between Thailand and France.

According to economic data provided by the department, foreign production spending remains a major revenue driver for the local economy. Between January and March 2026, Thailand hosted 162 inbound foreign productions, bringing in over THB 1.18 billion. This follows a full-year performance in 2025 that registered 546 international productions, generating THB 7.7 billion. Officials noted that the main driver for this steady operational volume is the national financial incentive program, which offers a cash rebate of up to 30% for qualified foreign investments.
