Bangkok MRT Station Hit by Electrical Short Circuit, Authorities Rush Overnight Repairs for Morning Service

Brickinfo News Agency – Deputy Transport Minister Pattarapong Phatraprasit inspected the MRT Tao Poon Station following an electrical short circuit that generated smoke earlier today, ordering relevant rail transport agencies to expedite overnight repairs with a view to resuming normal service by tomorrow morning if full safety standards are met.

The incident occurred at 12:32 PM when a short circuit was detected along the electrical cables on the train tracks at Tao Poon Station on Pracha Rat Sai 2 Road. Firefighters and emergency rescue teams from the Bang Pho station responded swiftly to investigate and bring the situation under control. Preliminary findings indicate that damaged cable wiring was the primary cause of the disruption.

Later at 1:15 PM, a fire alarm was activated inside a power supply room after smoke was detected. Emergency personnel entered the area and confirmed there were no active flames, though smoke and electrical arc burns were found. Technicians and safety inspectors are currently conducting a comprehensive assessment of the electrical systems to evaluate structural and technical readiness across the affected transit section.

Minister Pattarapong stated that the incident is fully contained, and Bangkok Expressway and Metro Public Company Limited (BEM) is preparing to undertake urgent restoration work throughout the night. The Department of Rail Transport (DRT), the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA), and BEM have been instructed to verify that all equipment operates safely before authorising the resumption of commercial train operations.

Officials stressed that while the goal is to reopen the transit line by morning, public safety remains the absolute priority. In the event that maintenance work faces delays or technical integrity cannot be fully verified in time, the Ministry of Transport has coordinated with the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) to deploy temporary shuttle buses along affected commuter routes to mitigate transit disruptions.
