Brickinfo News Agency – Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt has announced a comprehensive roadmap to transform the Songkran Festival into a world-class destination by prioritizing infrastructure development and sustainable environmental management. Following the success of the 2026 celebrations, which saw nearly 700,000 participants on Silom Road alone, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is moving forward with plans to enhance pedestrian safety and connectivity to support the growing number of international tourists visiting the Thai capital.

The BMA’s development strategy includes significant infrastructure improvements, specifically focusing on sidewalk renovations and the creation of seamless pedestrian routes. A key highlight of the proposal is the consideration of a new Skywalk connection linking the high-traffic Silom area directly to Lumpini Park. This project aims to alleviate congestion during major events while providing long-term benefits for daily commuters and residents by improving urban mobility and public safety through upgraded CCTV systems and better drainage.

Addressing environmental concerns, the city has launched an innovative circular economy initiative to tackle the waste generated by water festivities. In collaboration with the private sector, the BMA has established collection points across nine locations to gather discarded plastic water guns. These items, which are typically difficult to recycle, are being processed into naphtha oil and eventually transformed into food-grade plastic pellets. This project not only reduces the environmental footprint of the festival but also serves as a model for sustainable waste management in large-scale urban events.

Governor Chadchart emphasized that the festival’s strength lies in its inclusivity and its role as a major economic driver for the city. “Bangkok’s Songkran is more than just a festival; it is a People Festival where everyone participates,” the Governor stated. He further noted that the event serves as a vital force for the grassroots economy, benefiting a wide range of stakeholders from small street vendors and transportation providers to the hospitality and service sectors.

The long-term vision for Bangkok involves a collaborative effort between the public and private sectors to maintain the unique charm of Thai hospitality while meeting international standards. By integrating modern technology and sustainable practices, the BMA intends to ensure that the Songkran Festival remains a safe, enjoyable, and environmentally conscious event that continues to attract visitors from around the globe for years to come.
