Palo Alto Networks Report Reveals Machine Identities Outnumber Humans 111:1 in Asia Pacific

Brickinfo News Agency – Palo Alto Networks has released findings from its 2026 Identity Security Landscape Report, revealing that machine identities now outnumber human workers 111:1 across enterprise networks in the Asia-Pacific region. The global survey of 2,930 cybersecurity decision-makers highlights a expanding gap between the rapid adoption of autonomous AI agents and legacy security governance frameworks, as identity replaces malware as the primary enterprise attack vector.

According to the study, 100% of surveyed organizations in Asia-Pacific have deployed AI agents, with a clear majority anticipating further expansion of machine identities over the next 12 months. The research indicates that 90% of regional organizations suffered a successful identity-related breach in the past year. Additionally, 98% of human identities retain access privileges exceeding their actual job requirements, while 98% of organizations report operating within identity silos driven primarily by unmanaged AI tool adoption. These fragmented security environments add an average response delay of 13 hours per incident.

In Singapore, machine identities outnumber human employees 107:1, with 85% of local enterprises expecting further growth in non-human identity populations. Key factors driving this expansion include machine identity proliferation (51%), third-party and vendor ecosystem growth (43%), and large language model integration (41%). Furthermore, 97% of Asia-Pacific organizations anticipate financial losses if digital certificate renewals are not fully automated, estimating average annual costs at USD 305,161 due to management overhead and potential outages.

Jeffrey Kok, Senior Director of Idira Domain Consulting at Palo Alto Networks, noted that machine identities are expanding at a compound annual growth rate near 40%, driven largely by artificial intelligence integration. Kok emphasized that disconnected systems severely impair operational speed, creating significant delays during incident response while malicious actors utilize compromised human or machine credentials to gain unauthorized system access.

Addressing these security challenges requires enterprise cybersecurity strategies to evolve by centralizing AI agent governance across SaaS, cloud, and developer platforms. Palo Alto Networks recommends transitioning to just-in-time, time-bound access models that eliminate permanent standing privileges, alongside integrating automated identity management architectures capable of performing real-time discovery and enforcement across both human and non-human identities.
