Brickinfo News Agency – China and Cambodia have officially inaugurated their first “2+2” Strategic Dialogue involving foreign and defense ministers to deepen bilateral cooperation across political and security sectors. Held on April 22 in Phnom Penh, the high-level meeting resulted in a broad consensus on regional stability, defense coordination, and a specific commitment to mediating improved relations between Cambodia and Thailand.

The meeting was co-chaired by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Defense Minister Dong Jun, alongside Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn and Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Tea Seiha. During the discussions, Wang Yi emphasized that China views this new mechanism as a “strategic platform for strengthening political and defense security cooperation,” describing it as a vital tool for fostering a China-Cambodia community with a shared future.

A significant portion of the dialogue focused on regional diplomacy, specifically concerning border stability. Wang Yi stated that China supports Cambodia and Thailand in implementing the consensus reached during previous trilateral talks in Yunnan. He noted that China is ready to provide a “comprehensive and effective communication platform” to help revitalize mutual trust and improve relations between the two Southeast Asian neighbors. Additionally, China pledged continued humanitarian assistance for residents living along the Cambodian border and the promotion of poverty reduction projects.

On the security front, both nations agreed to intensify law enforcement cooperation to combat transnational crimes, including online gambling and telecommunications fraud. Chinese Defense Minister Dong Jun highlighted China’s readiness to “deepen and strengthen mutual trust in military security.” In response, Prak Sokhonn reaffirmed Cambodia’s stance that China remains its “most reliable friend,” reiterating the country’s firm adherence to the One-China principle and its support for China’s national reunification efforts.

The delegation also addressed global governance, advocating for a security model based on dialogue rather than unilateralism. Both parties emphasized their commitment to global free trade and international fairness, while opposing “power politics.” Tea Seiha added that Cambodia is eager to explore new avenues for military collaboration to further modernize the longstanding partnership between the two nations.
