True Corporation Boosts 5G Performance in Thonglor with Dynamic Spectrum Sharing
Brickinfo News Agency – True Corporation has implemented Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS) technology on its 2600 MHz spectrum band, starting with the Thonglor area of Bangkok. This deployment aims to enhance 5G performance and optimize spectrum usage for both 5G and 4G services. The initiative is part of True’s broader network modernization strategy, designed to improve service delivery for its customer base, which includes over 14.2 million 5G subscribers as of Q1/2025. Following the initial rollout in Thonglor, True plans to expand this technology nationwide.
Dynamic Spectrum Sharing is an advanced technology that allows for the flexible and real-time allocation of the 2600 MHz spectrum band between 5G and 4G services, adapting to actual user demand. This approach contrasts with traditional fixed spectrum allocation, where specific portions of the band are permanently assigned to either 5G or 4G, potentially limiting the full utilization of the 2600 MHz for 5G, particularly when demand fluctuates. DSS ensures that the spectrum is utilized efficiently by adjusting resource allocation as needed.
The primary advantage of DSS lies in its ability to dynamically manage spectrum resources. For instance, in an area with a high concentration of 5G users, DSS can allocate the entire 2600 MHz band for optimal 5G performance. If the user distribution shifts, and 4G demand increases in the same area, the system will adjust the 2600 MHz spectrum proportionally to accommodate the higher 4G usage, responding to real-time customer needs. This dynamic allocation aims to ensure that both 5G and 4G users receive optimized network performance based on their current demands.
In a related development, True Corporation recently acquired 70 MHz of the 2300 MHz spectrum. This addition to their spectrum portfolio allows the 2300 MHz mid-band spectrum to be primarily used for 4G services, thereby preserving the full capacity of the 2600 MHz band for 5G. This strategic allocation aims to provide improved network performance for both 5G and 4G users, potentially exceeding previous service limitations.
Thonglor was chosen as the initial location for this 5G DSS deployment due to its status as a high-potential urban area in Bangkok, characterized by a blend of business activities, lifestyle venues, and urban residences. The area is also recognized as an international hub, popular among young professionals, businesspeople, and expatriates. Mr. Sigve Brekke, Group CEO of True Corporation Public Company Limited, reportedly conducted an on-site inspection in Thonglor with network engineers and specialists to test and monitor the 5G service with DSS technology.
