Japan to Provide Defence Equipment Aid to Thailand, Seven Other Nations in Indo-Pacific
Brickinfo News Agency – Japan is set to provide defence equipment to Thailand and seven other countries in the current fiscal year as part of its Official Security Assistance (OSA) framework. This initiative, which began in April 2023, aims to bolster the defence capabilities of developing nations in the Indo-Pacific region, particularly amidst increasing military presence and activities. The move underscores Japan’s commitment to ensuring safe sea lanes and contributing to regional stability.
The eight nations designated to receive assistance under the OSA framework for fiscal year 2025, starting from April, include Thailand, East Timor, Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, and Tonga. A government source indicated that the aid may include Japanese-made drones, which are intended for use in natural disaster relief and maritime surveillance missions. This expansion reflects a growing scope of Japan’s security cooperation in the region.
The OSA scheme was established by Japan in April 2023 to assist developing countries in strengthening their defence capacities. This program is distinct from Japan’s long-standing Official Development Assistance (ODA), which focuses on non-military aid. In the previous two fiscal years, through 2024, countries such as Bangladesh, Djibouti, Fiji, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mongolia, and the Philippines were recipients of this assistance. Notably, in May, the Fiji navy received a rescue boat and surveillance equipment, marking the first delivery under the OSA framework.
For fiscal year 2025, Japan has allocated 8.1 billion yen (approximately US$56 million) for OSA assistance. This represents a substantial increase from the 2 billion yen earmarked in fiscal year 2023 and 5 billion yen in fiscal year 2024, highlighting Japan’s growing investment in regional security partnerships. The expanded budget and recipient list demonstrate Japan’s strategic approach to fostering security and deterrence capabilities among its partners in the Indo-Pacific.
