Brickinfo News Agency – President Donald Trump has engaged directly with the leaders of Cambodia and Thailand, urging an immediate ceasefire and peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict between the two nations. Trump, who is currently in discussions for potential trade agreements with both countries, stated that no deals would be finalized while hostilities continue, emphasizing his commitment to linking economic cooperation with regional stability. This diplomatic intervention, announced via his Truth Social platform on the evening of July 26, marks a significant push by the former president to de-escalate tensions and foster peace in Southeast Asia.

Trump’s initial post revealed that he had spoken with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and was in the process of contacting the Thai side to request a ceasefire. He explicitly linked the ongoing conflict to trade negotiations, stating, “I don’t want to make a deal with any country if they’re still fighting, and I told them that!” He also drew a parallel to the successful resolution of the India-Pakistan conflict, suggesting a similar outcome could be achieved.

Following his conversations, Trump confirmed that he had spoken with Thailand’s Acting Prime Minister, Phumtham Wechayachai, who provided a positive response, with both nations expressing a desire for an “immediate ceasefire and peace.” Trump then relayed this message back to the Cambodian Prime Minister. He expressed optimism that “a ceasefire, peace, and prosperity seem to be naturally possible.”

In a subsequent update, Trump affirmed that he had again spoken with the Cambodian leader to convey the outcome of his discussion with Thailand. He stated that both leaders agreed to meet swiftly to negotiate a ceasefire and pursue peace. While both Thailand and Cambodia expressed interest in resuming trade talks with the U.S., Trump reiterated that such discussions would not be “appropriate” until the fighting officially ceased. He praised both nations for their “long history and culture,” expressing hope for a long-term peaceful coexistence and anticipating the conclusion of trade agreements once peace is established.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet also confirmed his discussion with Trump regarding the armed conflict. Manet stated that Trump “does not want to see war or fighting that leads to loss of life and injuries on both sides.” He reiterated Cambodia’s clear agreement to an “immediate and unconditional ceasefire” between the two armies, a stance he had previously affirmed with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on July 24. Manet expressed optimism about Thailand’s reported agreement to an immediate ceasefire and has assigned Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Prak Sokhonn, to engage with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken to coordinate with the Thai side for swift implementation of the agreed principles. Manet thanked Trump for his initiative, hoping that these efforts will safeguard lives and enable refugees to return to their homes in peace.

Meanwhile, Acting Prime Minister of Thailand, Phumtham Wechayachai, confirmed his phone conversation with Trump, stating that Thailand “agrees in principle to a ceasefire.”

However, Wechayachai emphasized Thailand’s desire to see a “genuine intention” from Cambodia and requested U.S. facilitation for prompt bilateral discussions. He stressed the need for Cambodia to demonstrate sincerity to jointly define clear measures and processes for a ceasefire, leading to a peaceful and sustainable resolution.

Later, Wechayachai affirmed that Thai soldiers would continue their duties until a concrete agreement with Cambodia is reached, reiterating the condition that Cambodian military forces and equipment must be withdrawn from the border area as an assurance against future threats to Thai citizens and national interests.
