Thailand and Singapore Elevate Bilateral Ties Through Forward-Looking Strategic Partnership at 5th Leaders’ Retreat

Brickinfo News Agency – Thai Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul convened with Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong at the 5th Thailand–Singapore Leaders’ Retreat on Wednesday at the Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok, marking the first bilateral retreat between both nations in 11 years. Following their discussions, both leaders announced the Joint Statement on the Thailand-Singapore Forward-Looking Strategic Partnership to chart future bilateral collaboration across four core pillars: sustainability and energy-food security, economy and digital investment, defense and security, and regional strategic coordination, ahead of their consecutive ASEAN chairmanships over the next two years.

Government Spokesperson Rachada Dhnadirek stated that the summit provided a framework for expanding cooperation across multiple sectors, including defense, food security, digital economy, artificial intelligence, and regional diplomacy. During the event, both prime ministers witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Thailand’s Ministry of Social Development and Human Security and Singapore’s Ministry of Social and Family Development, which facilitates collaboration in social welfare, community development, disability support, women and family affairs, and personnel exchange. Additionally, both sides agreed to finalize four future agreements covering the digital economy, transnational crime suppression, food security, and supply chain resilience.

Under the agreed strategic framework, the two nations committed to advancing clean energy initiatives, reinforcing the Lao PDR–Thailand–Malaysia–Singapore Power Integration Project to bolster the ASEAN Power Grid, and expanding carbon credit trading, hydrogen initiatives, and low-carbon technologies. On food security, Thailand reaffirmed its role as a stable food supplier to Singapore, building on the five-year 100,000-tonne rice delivery agreement with plans to encompass other agricultural commodities. In economic cooperation, Thailand sought Singaporean investment in critical industries such as semiconductors, logistics, and high-skilled workforce development, alongside financial connectivity, artificial intelligence collaboration, and Singapore’s backing for Thailand’s accession to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

The security agenda addressed bilateral defense, cybersecurity resilience, and coordinated crackdowns on transnational cyber fraud through institutional alignment with commercial banks and technology firms. Regarding regional matters, both leaders discussed ASEAN’s central role in resolving the crisis in Myanmar, with Prime Minister Anutin outlining Thailand’s strategy of calibrated re-engagement to bridge ASEAN-Myanmar relations in close coordination with Singapore. Touching upon Thai-Cambodian ties, the Thai premier confirmed that bilateral differences will continue to be addressed peacefully through existing official mechanisms. Prime Minister Wong affirmed that bilateral relations remain anchored in mutual trust and substantive potential, while Thailand announced plans to host an upcoming ministerial-level meeting between foreign and trade ministers to execute these strategic directives.
