Brickinfo News Agency – The Thai government has officially unveiled the “Pho-Lanna Thai Massage 450-Hour” curriculum, a strategic integration of the UNESCO-recognized Wat Pho traditional massage and the unique cultural heritage of Lanna wisdom. This initiative aims to establish a distinctive brand for Thai massage services, utilizing the San Kamphaeng Hot Springs in Chiang Mai province as a flagship model to transform the region into a comprehensive international wellness hub.

The newly developed 450-hour course draws from the historical Thai massage texts of Wat Pho dating back to the reign of King Rama III, blending them with the refined arts of Northern Thailand. The curriculum focuses on “Identity and Standards,” characterized by the graceful and continuous “Lanna Rhythm.” This specialized technique includes 11 massage postures and nine core steps, featuring traditional methods such as Tok Sen (hammer massage), Chet Haek, Ju, and Fon Choeng stretching exercises.

According to Ploythalay Laksameesangchan, Deputy Government Spokesperson, the curriculum has been formally certified as a standard by the Department of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine. The initial phase will prioritize training for practitioners at the San Kamphaeng Hot Springs and eight surrounding communities. This approach is designed to offer a holistic experience for tourists, combining specialized massage with local scents, cuisine, and the natural therapeutic benefits of the hot springs.

“This 450-hour curriculum aims to create sustainable income for local communities while elevating Thai massage to international service standards,” stated Ms. Ploythalay. She further noted that the first training session is scheduled to commence in Chiang Mai in late May 2026. By standardizing these local wisdoms, the government expects to strengthen Thailand’s position in the global wellness tourism market.
